So, I've just been offered a new job, much better terms and prospects than the one I'm working at the moment. But the offer is conditional on getting at least 2 good references.

Now, my current boss is a megalomaniac who will take offence to me jumping ship for a better deal. And I've been here for the last 4 years.

My previous employer before that employed me since 2001. The company has been dissolved since then and I don't have the contact details of my previous boss.

Any ideas on how I can go about getting a couple of good references?

If you don't mind this 'coming out', HR for your current job should supply you with a reference (they say 9/10ths of fk all these days).

Before that gets tricky. Maybe speak to your new employer and explain the situation, it is hardly uncommon to lose touch with old colleagues...

Instead of going to your boss, go to his boss? or someone of equal importance? or just anyone in the company who is your superior?

I should add that I currently work for a small firm of solicitors, and my boss is THE boss - it's his firm, and there is no HR department...

As a solicitor he will be very aware that a bad reference is libel. This is why they say next to bugger all, these days. Refusal to give one would not be viewed well, either. But, it does make your life harder.

I'd concentrate first on somehow getting a reference for the previous job, or a reference from someone else if your new employer will accept it. Then, politely explain to your boss that you've had an offer you cannot refuse, and hope for the best.

All the best.

Any contacts I can reach from my previous employer will know my current one, and will probably tell him I'm jumping ship.

So I need to tell my boss first really.

Best of luck. Be polite. Explain that you've had a very good offer, you want to take it, and you'd like a reference. Please.

You cannot prevent him acting like an ahole, but at least it would only be him acting badly. Hopefully your new employer will be understanding.
