As the title really GF's got to go to hospital for an appointment, unlikely she'll be in a mood/physical state to go back to work afterwards. Should she book it as a days holiday or should she be permitted to "book" a days sick leave and not loose holiday entitlement?

Thanks in advance!

To me, booking a sickday in advance just seems wrong. I'm sure her employer will have an opinion on it, may not be the one you want though.

I booked a couple of weeks holiday for a hospital procedure and subsequent recovery. Not the best holiday I've had, mind. silly

Seems a bit unfair as its an appointment to zap some pre-cancerous cells.

Hardly optional. However if thats the way it works though.

I'd suggest she ask her immediate manager for advice, and if she hasn't got one ask the HR dept. Could well be she is entitled to unpaid leave.

All the best to her. I presume by "pre-cancerous" that all is well, IYSWIM.

yup, just a formality really, quite run-of-the-mill to be honest. But certainly not an option.

I'll suggest she has a chat with HR, slightly better chance of confidentiality there than with the line manager I think.

Thanks!

For the sake of privacy I'd just book a holiday rather than tell/ask the "bosses".

Another Why from me too.

I manage a small team, and if ever they need time off for whatever reason...I do everything to make sure they get it. I found it works very well, as none have ever thrown a sickie...because they don't need to.

"Bosses" can actually be quite understanding I hear smile

Because I wouldn't want my employer/HR knowing what is or might be wrong with me medically.

Ah, posting on the web is far better.

What's wrong with me (hypotheticaly) wanting to keep my health "issue" to mself?
I don't see anything unusual about that at all.

Nothing at all, it's your prerogative to do so.

However, many employers would trust their staff to not take the piss so would not necessarily ask for a detailed description of the ailment.

To be fair, very few on here know me in real life, those that do is just from the odd car meet and one I work with from time-to-time and even fewer have ever met the missus. Even so, it's not exactly something to be ashamed of is it? Just a fact of life.

No - it's not something to be ashamed of. People have hospital appointments that need to be accomadated by 'work' all the time. It's a slight inconvenience, but no big deal...I'm sure they'll be something about procedures in the Company handbook, but a call to HR is just as easy.

Oh I'm sure they are lovely about it. Just as many will have a gossip that tells everyone within 100 yards. wink

Personally, I'd book a days holiday as said and to save another post I'm not suggesting at all (OP) there's anything to be ashamed of.
