As part of a bloody long winded application form one of the questions is "Please provide a pen portrait of yourself and your personal history"

Now having only ever worked in Engineering I have never had to do pointless questions like this.

Does anybody have any advice or examples of how to do it well?

Take a photo of yourself; if you use a mirror, the portrait will be reversed. Use an ink pen as the finish is nicer.

It's just one of those personal summaries. Usual advice is don't make st up like saying you're proactive. Write honestly about who you are and your goals.

Stupid questions like that would put me off applying altogether.

haha indeed. After doing this 20+ times after graduating, I vowed never to do it again. If they don't like my CV, then I'll go elsewhere.
