This may come across as obvious, but i was wondering if someone could clear it up for me?

Right now you can get qualified as a mechanic with either city & guilds, or with NVQ + work experience. All garages look for one or the other when hiring and thats that. I also know that to become an MOT tester you need the lv4 course for each, so you can get your testers badge etc.

Now what id like to know is, do you legally need to have the qualifications below lv4 to become a mechanic, or are they just ways for employers to see you know what you're doing?

Thanks in advance.

There is no legal requirement to becoming a mechanic, the qualifications you mentioned are just a method of showing a competancy. I am city and guilds qualified from years back but was never asked if i had any when applying for jobs.
There are pelnty of ways to get into the trade and work up if thats what you want.

Thats what i thought thanks biggrin

The reason i ask is ive managed to secure my college placement for the NQV apprenticeship, but nowhere is taking on apprentices atm frown I don know if its my age (21) putting people off, or if theres genuinly no work out there.

If it comes to sept and ive still not got a work placement, ive been considering doing some work on my own on the side, to build up experience etc, as i really dont want to have to wait another year to get into it. Ive got quite alot of experience working on my own cars, friends family etc, so its not like id be starting from scratch making the tea.
