I'm 17 and had my Career path plotted out, I was going to join the British Army!
I only planned on doing 4 Years to get some cash behind me and then do something else. I've passed everything and all I need to do now Is wait for my start date and crack on with Training.
The thing Is, I was going Into Infantry and now I've thought about It I'm not really going to get anything out of that Qualification wise. So I asked about changing my Job choice to something more Mechanic/Engineering wise and He told me that I'd have to re-do Selection and I'd be looking at another 6 Months!

Now I'm not sure what I want to do, I definitely want to do something Mechanic wise and not Infantry but do I just deal with It and wait 6 or more Months and then go Into the Army or do I try and get a Job at a Garage and go to College as an aprentice next September?

Cheers, Butch

How long before you could get a transfer from infantry once you've started?

If it's a while then I'd wait it out for another 6 months and just do temp work in that time. You'll find that a lot more people will want you with a forces background, than by working your way through from a tea boy for a back street garage.

There's nothing stopping you doing educational courses or cross-training when you're in the infantry. It's a lot easier to change trades once you've already got your foot in the door too and they're throwing HGV courses, mechanical courses at everyone who wants one.
But if you want to enlist as something other than infantry then just wait - it might be a pain but you're talking about a sizeable chunk of your life.

hi Butch you're lucky you're so young and making these decisions now good for you i would go into the army to do engineering. there is no money in cars atm the economy is so bad dont go college lucky for me i did a level 3 btec in motorsport engineering which has got me into uni and i quit doing an apprenticeship because it was rubbish, aim higher. motortrade isnt as glamourous as its made out to be but then being female things were made difficult for me.

the army is a good option because you will earn money and pay for your education but another option is motorsport? i loved it and gained alot from it opened alot more doors. dont go into the army for the wrong reasons hope this helps
