I know lying on your CV is bad form and can lead to dismissal but a bit of truth bending can't hurt...can it?

For example, the first thing I do in the morning is collect a fax from the machine, photocopy it and put it on our trader's desks ready for their arrival. It's very basic market data received from our Asian office.

Is it too much to describe this in my CV as 'collection and distribution of far-eastern market data'?

Anybody else bend the truth in this way?

As long as you're happy for them to ask at interview "Can you tell me a little more about your involvement in collecting and distributing said information"......

I have interviewed many people for technical IT roles and the experience outlined on their CV's has been nothing but a figment of their imagination. I have been down right rude to them and told them as much and thanks for wasting my time. This may sound harsh/unprofessional but so is writing a pack of lies and passing it off as your career history.
Best one was a supposed "pen tester", turns out he had watched over the shoulder as an IBM consultant had carried out a port scan, f**kin muppet.

I'd use collation. That's bending and not outright lying as discussed above.

In the current climate, you have to do everything possible to get ahead. This includes whatever hotrodding/turboing/cheating you can get away with. It is harsh, but the bottom line is that it is dog eat dog, do you want to succeed or do you want to take the moral high ground and let someone else succeed?

It is a more positive thing to have had a few job interviews/applications and have the "right, how can I win" attitude, rather than that sick, hopeless feeling of being screwed.

Keep it up but never say anything you can't actually do in practice. Most CV checkers are pretty lazy, you can put all sorts of irrelevant bullst down that makes you look like "choice material". Take every opportunity to make the interviewer feel good about themselves and you'll be in there.

In my line, there are so many people, even if I turboed my CV and ran it on avgas, it would still come way down the list from all the wonderful people who are choosing to do something more safe/menial..... frown

Or just omit it? It's hardly a task to list on your CV unless it's really, really empty.

If you lie abou specific skills, it will show up as soon as you start the job. plus your new employer may just phone your old one to get a reference, or he may be a pistonheads forum member.

I employ people for their skills, if someone mislead me in that way and it meant that they couldnt do what I had employed them for then their feet wouldn't touch and their next employer wouldnt be seeing a glowing reference!

Thanks for the replies.

Just to clarify, I'm not actually putting this on my CV - I was updating it for my new job, so going through my daily routine and thought of this.

Whats the furthest you, or anyone you've interviewed bent the truth?

Just a warning, we let someone go after a week with us as we found their IT skills were obviously overstated but a massive amount. Did not improve our mood one bit.

I've been away a lot over the past few years, I'll just talk about that if I get asked.

If it's a big lie they will find out, I've seen people escorted from the building because they could not do the job they claimed.
