Union question

Someone I know works for McDonalds and tells me that its written into their contract that they cannot be a member of a union. Is that true, and if so is that legal?

I thought police and the armed forces were the only ones that cannot be part of a union.

Dont think they can stop you joining a union but I believe they dont have to recognise the fact that youve joined one.
