Sick days & SSP

If a company only pays the minimum Statutory Sick Pay - what are the rules when it comes to the company telling you to go home?

For example say you're feeling a bit run down but still go in to work. Over the course of the morning you feel steadily worse, but you need money so don't go home. Can your employer tell you to go home? If so, would you still only be entitled to SSP benefits?

SSP has a three day waiting period, therefore you only receive SSP if you are ill for more than three days.

I believe you can self certify yourself up to five days otherwise you will need a doctors note.

I think your employers will have to prove that you are not up to doing your job.

Thought it was three days if time from last SSP was less than a certain period .
In other words if you wnt off sick regularly ,you only got penalised once .
(Could have changed ,since for past few years I've been working to a six month sick period and only had a few days off in that)
