Summer Jobs for an engineering student

Hi all,

I have been doing a fair bit of research into a summer job next year and as a engineering student I am currently interested in a summer job in oil & gas or on the railway infrastructure (1 years previous experience here)

So PH collective, what are chances of actually getting a decent summer job in which I would actually learn something, the pay does not bother me.

I have been looking but it seems to me its hard to get onto a summer job within oil & gas and the railway only has menial work to offer.

Any recommendation where to look? or any websites specializing in this?

Ross, can't comment on the rail sector, but the oil & gas sector, certainly amongst most of the major contractors is in a pretty dire state right now. Redundancies are currently the name of the game which will make it very difficult to find summer work if you look at the moment. If you want to look in O&G I'd wait a few months & see what shakes out in the business,

Do something practical. Mechanic, Machinist, Builder etc etc etc.

It seems to be a big deal in interviews for engineering jobs when they find out that you have practical skills and aren't afraid to get your hands dirty. I'd say these sort of jobs have been worth more to me than any other summer job as engineers (particularly older types) see you as a real practical engineer than a university pen pusher.

I would contact Atkins they appear to be constantly recruiting at the moment in the oil and gas sector. Admittedly on the structural engineering side but it may be worth a punt. The work all seems to be around Aberdeen.

Back when I was studying engineering at uni, they paid quite well the industrial placements too.
