Design Consultant - Tax? Insurance?

Hello,

Does anyone know whether an independant design consultant would need liability insurance for work done? Or is there some way of transferring liability to the company yo are working for?

And what are the tax implications of work done, assuming I have a full time job and work during holidays? Is it a major hassle? Would I need an accountant to sort it all out?
