Hi,

I have a dilemma/problem, In 2008 I graduated from University with a 2:2 in IT, now I am older than what a normal graduate would be when they graduate.

I have no relevant work experience within IT and also some of the jobs I am applying for say 'Junior' this and 'Junior' that.

I have no work experience within IT to back up my qualifications and have now been unemployed for like over 2 years now, I have tried looking at Volunteering and Internships but I can't afford to do either and besides most of the IT interns I have seen are not paid. As for volunteering they have started adding age restrictions now, so most of them have ruled me out.

I don't know really what to do, any ideas ?
How to write my CV / What sections to add ?

Thanks

If you get any other replies they aren't likely to be helpful, mainly because you haven't provided enough information.

A CV bascially lists your education and the work that you've done, if you've nothing relevant to IT then you will just have to write what you have done and hope for the best, unless you want to provide some more information and then maybe you might get some useful suggestions.

Whatever you do write, make sure you get it proof read for grammar as well as spelling.

I know this probably isn't what you want to hear, but my experience of IT is that actual "on the job" experience counts for a lot more than actual qualifications. I'm pretty sure I would have been in a much better position had I spent my 3 years working (while getting qualifications like an MCSE) than getting my degree.

My advice? Be prepared to start right at the bottom, in real basic technical support, either as a screwdriver-monkey or a phone-monkey. Pay is crap, but it'll get you the vital experience. While doing this, try and get some recognised quals, like MCSE/Cisco/ITIL. But it all depends what direction you want to go into, "IT" is a broad area!

Hi,

Thanks for your reply, In response to MattyB_ post,

I have tried looking for work starting right at the bottom, but I still get know-where, its like that want people with experience but will not give a position to someone who is untried and untested.

I have a degree that can be adapted to a range of IT fields, I got elements of web design and development, databases, programming and Networking.

I got a objective section, technical skills section, qualifications, references section, because I have explained my IT skills and talked about what I did that takes up about a page and half.

Its really starting to depress me now, that I spent 4 years getting a degree that now has become basically useless!!
