hiya, im a maintenance sparky and have been out my time 2 years now, working in the petrochemical business.

ive got an interview for an offshore job next week and wondering if anypne has any tips?

could someone explain to me how the rig makes it electricity, i understand most use gas turbines for day to day running and then have diesel generators as backup if ths gt's trip offline?

thanks

yep thats exactly it, my old rig had three gas powered rolls royce Avon generators for power with two Ruston diesel gennys for back up as well as a smaller Diesel MTU genny for power for the accomodation.

Is it a maintainance role or operations you are going for???

If its the former then im pretty sure you'll understand the basics, maybe read up on EX regulations etc again, if its the latter then read up on generator theory, synchronising generators, and HV switching and protection.

The more research you can do up front the better, so look into the company a bit as well.

Good luck!

We import our power on initial start up then have x2 Avon generators feeding 6.6Kv switchboards, supplemented by x2 Diesel fueled Solars and a Petbow emergency genny. As the above post states, read up on Ex stuff, sycronising, Power management systems (such as Prismic).
Good luck with the interview....
