Recently we’ve had a spate of undesirables letting themselves into the practice through the fire escape, which is currently unlocked.

The door is a key only type lock and was originally meant to have a bar thing fitted but never did.
My surgery is in the corridor with the fire escape and quite isolated from the rest of the practice. I was lucky last night that I had a patient with me and one of the dentists upstairs happened to be making a coffee when he saw the drunk peering into my surgery!

I’m seriously unhappy about this and the company are dragging their heels making the fire escape an exit only.

The other people won’t have the door locked incase there’s a fire and we can’t leave the key in the door because people are passing it all day to go upstairs.

How can I get the company to get it sorted ASAP? I think it’s unreasonable to be vulnerable at work.

Put some make up on to make it look like you have a black eye, tell them you got attacked by someone coming through the door. Get some compensation and spend it on your travels biggrin

Or give this link to whoever owns the building and let them know H&S would have kittens if there isn't a proper fire door.

You can use a key based system with a 'break glass' but it depends on the amount of people normally on site and if there is anyone with special needs; mobility, languages or age.

Speak to your boss and put on record with him/her how you feel about the door and ask when they plan on sorting the situation.

Other than that there's not much else you can do apart from kicking up a stink.

Thanks for the input! Liking the adventure fund idea hehe

The door is currently locked, it's going to be a bit of an issue amongst some of the people here, already causing friction!

Surely if people knew that you've had drunks/general riff raff and ruffians wandering in they'd all understand why it needs to be locked?

Stubborn older guy who rents a room for other treatment, he's been here longer than I've been alive and there never used to be a problem in the old days.

He seems to be coming round but it's taken 3 walk-ins and 1 arrested druggie!
