not for definate, but i was thinking about logistics so i would not normally be front line. Of course i dont expect to be trading small arms fire all day long thats not really what i want to do. Any PH members in the TA out there?

the ones i goto all have staff doing mostly feck all! but u never know drinking tea and eating donuts could be work!

I was in the RLC TA for a few years after I graduated. It was superb fun.

So long as you don't mind being paid to shoot rifles and drive Landies around Slab Common in the middle of the night and can put up with a bit of discipline, physical exercise and absurdly cheap beer, you'll be fine!

The odds on you being sent to Afghanistan against your will are pretty minute unless you happen to join an extremely specialist unit which just happens to be in demand, but most of those will tend to be staffed with ex-regulars who were in that arm to begin with. If you wanted to go, then you can put in for a tour, but you'd doubtless be expected to get a bit of experience first.

When I was in - late 90s - there were quite a few guys getting HGV licences and the like for free, but that might've been curtailed now, given our beloved government wielding the axe on training.

One of the things I enjoyed about it is that you end up meeting people from all sorts of walks of life that you wouldn't normally meet. And then getting horrifically drunk on Jaegermeister together.

So long as you've not got a girlfriend who'll get the hump if you're away at weekends, then I'd recommend it unreservedly.

Am I too old as it sounds great. What's the max age?

At the moment the max is 43 on sign up, although that's flexible if you have previous service or needed specialist skills.

If you're keen on wearing green and getting shot at, RAF Regiment reserves will take recruits up to 50 or so. They have CVR(T), so playing at tanks is on the cards.
