If offered VR I'd bite my companies hand off, however my dept missed out in the previous round of cost cutting last year. The top brass have told us recently they are "re examining" the structure of the company I work for.

Anyone got an idea of how I can request VR without prejudice? Has anyone done the same?

Have a quiet word with your boss over a pint.

Tell him that if the opportunity ever arose, and he needed to shed people, you'd be interested in talking to him.

Remember that if the boss has to get rid of someone, that's a headache. If he knows he's got a simple clean and amicable way to do it if he needs to, he will see you right.

Unfortunately this is where the plot thickens....my boss has already made it clear that there is no VR going (I enquired unofficially last year)and has pointedly mentioned my enquiries about it in subsequent work related discussions. Now my boss is several rungs below the top brass where I work so I am wondering if I go to the next management level up. I should have pointed this out in the OP...

Speak to the top brass.

Not without risk, but if you want to be first in line....

Cheers - pretty much what I'd figured. Just not sure I want to douse the bridge in petrol and chuck a match on it just yet...

Just done exactly this - in fact I finish tomorrow...

I worked out in advance what enhancement I would need to volunteer so I at least had some figures in mind and then I bided my time until the discussion was had about my department and I politely asked the MD to make me an offer if I volunteered to go.

I was the helpful position of being the head of the department that was being discussed.

Hopefully it will pay off and I will always back myself in the job market anyway so as of tomorrow I'm a free man for a week or so...

Cheers

DC

Edited to add - once you start this route with the top brass there's only usually one outcome so make sure you are certain you want to go.

Cheers DC - I'm sure I want out in the next 3-9 months, I just want to do it with some cash in my pocket.

Absolutley my sentiments when I had 'that' discussion - I wish you the very best of luck and hope you get what you want out of it.

All the best
