Hypothetical situation - Advice please
Discussion
So if for instance you have been working for someone for around 6 months, you have performed well, but haven't quite clicked with the director of your dept, despite being one of the best in the team each month.
So the question is this, they come to you mentioning that another department off site (1 hour drive each way, probably 2 hour on friday night) from the current business (where you have made good relations, and its 10 mins from your house) but within the company want you to do your role for them as they are a new project close to the MD's heart, but with a bit more control over how it all goes in your area, thats what they all say...
The current bosses play on the fact you have been selected because you stood out from the current crop of people in your role (about 35 people), and mention how much a positive effect this 6 month only contract will have to your career with said company...
So you agree to go and meet them, you then find out that the job has been touted about the floor and most people have said they are not interested, and the other couple that have said they are ar well known bad performers, and certainly not in your league.
So now you get the feeling they want you out, as its all a bit too weird... You have been told you ultimatly have a choice, but you must take the meeting seriously as the feedback goes directly goes to the MD of this large business..
What do you do??
So my take on it, is smash the interview, get offered it, and then politley turn it down having thought about your options, because you will NOT be getting more money, it will be further from your house, and you think its a bit of a joke that they have built up the job and then sent two people that are not up to much to go for it too...

I think this isn't hypothetical at all....
But: Do you want a career with this company? It could be a feather in your cap to take on a job nobody wants, but which the MD values. Equally, it could be a way of shoving you out of sight. Only you can decide which. They can't force you to take the job; but you need to be comfortable with the possible career-limitations you'll face if you turn it down.
If it were me, and on the evidence you've provided, I'd say no, and deal with any adverse consequences as they arose.

No its not hypothetical really, but there are reasons why I have told the story like I have.
Anyway, I met them earlier, got the email saying they would prefer me from the three that went. Manager asked what my true thoughts were.
I said I normally would love the opportunity, but I like my current workplace, people, product, and feel in 6 months I can promote myself just as well under the current job role and that I woudl rather stay, as I emjoy it.
The company is good, decent pathway, good people etc, but the money kind of dies after two years, so I don't see the need to do something that I really don't want to if I need to look further afield a few years later...
thanks for your thoughts, and its good to know I can still get a job over other people
