Hello,

I'll make this quick. I work for a large firm, and have just come out of my apprenticeship. I finished this late due to not being able to do some of the work needed in my curriculum (which they picked) at their site as contractors do the work. Now they have said I have to wait for September for skilled money. I have done all the qualifications, and there should be nothing holding me back.

I have no idea why, but they say I'm the only apprentice to finish around this time, and it will give me time to earn more experience (I do skilled work already) for the optional shift work ect ect. Is there anything I can do? Thought I'd ask...guess I just should be thankful I've got a job.

Unless you've got a something in your contract which says "after completion of apprenticeship/training...salary will increase to £XXXXX.XX" then it's not looking too hopeful.

There is probably something in there about you jumping ship though once you've completed your training. They don't want to loose their investment.

Good friend of mine completed his mechanics apprenticeship and was told he would still be earning £12k. He left to work for another garage and went to £18k.

Indeed, people hate suddenly having to pay x+y for what they were only paying x for before, human nature thing. Any chance of looking elsewhere? Otherwise I expect you are stuck with it.

Read the terms of your contract. If it doesn't specifically stipulate a pay review/rise upon completion and presentation of the qualifications you were working towards then you haven't really got a leg to stand on.

Alot of bigger companies do this. This happened to my brother and he spent months battling to not only get the payrise he was promised, in writing, but the back pay they expected him to roll over and write off as 'goodwill' for their investment in him...

Unless your contract says that it will be immediate, the rise will most likely kick in at the next review (or whatever they want to call it) - which from the sounds of it will be in September.
