Gas engineer - what's the drill?
Discussion
Are you sitting down !!!
Sadly owing to the large amount of people wanting a change of career/midlife crisis they changed the system a couple of years back and it may have changed again as its a couple of years since I was connected to the industry.
It used to be that anyone who did the course was deemed competent but they were finding that people just didnt have a clue about even the basics !!!
Gas Safety Training is split into categories according to type of appliance you hope to work on. But either way you have to do the Core (which covers pipework sizing, ventilation etc) and then each category.
So for example:
Core
+ Boilers
+ Gas Water Heaters
+ Gas Cookers
+ Gas Fires
+ Gas Meters
etc
And this is then split between Domestic or Commercial.
Now prior to starting the gas training you have to show you have had experience of working in the plumbing and heating industry or have recent plumbing NVQ's.
If neither of the above you maybe able to do a course where you shadow someone for many weeks and you learn the basics but this is many £££££'s and many weeks.
There isnt a quick fix way to do it and you may be better to do an apprenticeship
