I have been unemployed for 6 months and getting desperate. Today I have been invited for a training day for IPSOS/MORI. I dont get paid for that until I get accepted (no guarantees) and then only after doing 35 hours phone research. Its £5.80 ph and will probably only be 16 hours per week. Add to that Im going to have to drive 18 miles per shift AND pay car park charges for the 8 hour shift. I dont want to turn it doen but it really doesnt seem worth it, I normally earn about £25ph and its a scary reality check. I have some savings so could hang on a bit longer. It just doesnt feel right because at the end of the day it will be about £25 per shift after fuel, expenses and taxes.
What would you do?
Oh and I have two interviews for good jobs next week.

Crikey, I'd have to be pretty fking desperate to accept that. What does the £25 per shift work out as a per hour rate?

Sorry, I did read your OP WRT the hourly rate. I meant, what would be the net ph rate.

So, £25 per shift of 5 hours = £5ph net etc.

If you've been out of work for six months, you may come under the tax/NI limits, especially if you're only working 16 hours a week. (I don't know what the thresholds are, sorry)

sorry I was calculating that for a 6 hour shift after Tax, NI and expenses I would probably earn £25 per day, its soul destroying!

Hmm... I have to say if I were in your position, I wouldn't take it. Soul destroying definitely.

Good luck with the other interviews.

It may be sould destroying, but it will get you out of the house and getting you talking to other people. Who knows, it could lead to something else...

Have you got anything better to do?

(sorry, that sounds really facetious, I don't mean it to be)

well I really should be preparing for the two interviews next week and TBH I don't actually NEED the money but I'm getting twitchy not having any coming in. I'll keep searching for a better offer.

Can you take it but still go for the other job with no problems?

It sounds rubbish but I am weighing up the old tale if being in work and getting work myth.
