When I were young, I used to drive for a living. Started out as a dispatch rider and then moved on to mainly small vans and Transit Lutons with the odd bit of mini-cabbing. From time to time I drove larger stuff like 3.5 - 7.5 ton trucks.

Now as my current business appears to be disappearing up it's own ass, I might have to try to return to driving but I certainly won't do cabs again and the bikes, well I'm getting on and don't have the gung ho nerve anymore.

There always seems to be a bit of work driving the smaller lorries but it seems that you need a separate licence these days.

According to the DVLA I can drive a small truck on my car licence as I passed my test yonks ago but just out of interest how do you go about being tested, as anyone who passed after 1997 has to.

As I said, just curious as I can't find anything other than HGV training on the web.

I think you should have Category C1 on your licence (7.5t entitlement) if you passed your test before 1997. I certainly drove them when delivering stuff as a student job.

I suppose you would look for driver training, there must be something for light trucks although if someone were going to all the expense of training then it would be prudent to go straight to LGV.
Google C1 training.
