Hi guys, just after some advise really, as some of you may know there is a PCS union strike set for the 8th and 9th of march, now iv been in the job nearly a year now and desperate for a new job, now my question is how would me participating in a union strike look on my record from a potential employers prospective? is this likely to put them off?

Thanks for any advise

Alex

How would a new employer know you had participated?

yeah well i am striking reluctantly. Essentially a new employer is not allowed to ask or know about your union activities. Dont worry about it and enjoy your days off.

Supposedly staff only go on strike because the Employer is in the wrong...so it shouldn't be of any interest to a future employer really should it, so that's why they don't get to know.

I do feel however unless it's a strike about health and safety or illegal activity by the employer it shouldn't be allowed.

I would say it depends on your new job,

If say your new employer is heavily unionised and suffers from industrial action then I am sure they will not want more union types joining the company.

Thanks for the replies guys, was just really wondering if potential employers would get to know as i dont have a clue what kind of information they have to give when providing a reference etc, so really its nothing to worry about?

Thanks again

From a legal point of view, there would be no reason for an employer to offer information about union activities in a reference, and no reason or right for a new employer to ask about it.

If you are looking for a new job anyway, then why are you striking against your current employer?

Because the strike is about redundancy and cash/pensions or some such. Things that would affect someone about to be thrown out the door anyway.
