How many work away from home?

Are there any people here that work away from home either during the week or for the month etc?
If you do, how do you find it? How does it affect your home life and family?
I've got the option of a position, money is good, work should be good, but I'll be away from Monday to Thursday (back Fridays) so a 3 day weekend every week.
I could in theory drive there every day but it's a 2.5hr journey each way and I think that's going to be unreasonable.
I am working at present locally but like many my wages are down and the income just about covers our outgoings. No room for manoeuvre really so if interest rates go up then I could be shafted.
Anyhow interested to hear of peoples experiences.

I work away, for long periods. Don't have kids, but my OH finds it tough - and has started to make noises about 'the' ultimatum.
I don't enjoy it, in fact I hate it most of the time, but the money is good.
Unfortunately at the moment there is no live at home option, if I give this job up, I'll revert to a live away during the week setup - which is no good either IMO. 2 days at the weekend, one would be spent recovering from a long week at work then a long drive home, the next would be spent dreading going back again.

I worked for 3 years in Paris, but based in London.
It is tough during the week, but I distracted myself with work, learning the language and other activities. It was little things like it hardly be worthwhile to eat (for both of us), and the evenings could be lonely if you are used to a stable background.

On the plus side I was home by 7pm Friday, having had a couple of glasses of champagne on the Eurostar home.

I'm in the Navy based in Plymouth, I'm away from home every week apart from When on leave and weekends.
My G/F is a student at Southampton Uni and we plan to get a place in Southampton when she finishes in May.
I travel to southampton from plymouth (3 hours) each way every weekend, Leave Midday Fri and go back Sun evening.
In my opinion i counld'nt stay down plymouth for a weekend. I just have to get away from it all as when we go to sea for say months at a time can get quite crap, so i have to make the most of it. One of the main reasons why i stay in the navy is the money (35k+) at the age of 23. I don't intend to do it for decades as money doesn't buy you hapiness etc, im mearly using the Navy as a 'stepping stone' to a good played job on the outside. My Missus is ok with my being away etc, and is proud of what i do etc. Once we get in a routine of me being away for a while or alongside for a while were great. We make the most of it at weekends i.e. spending time together / going out etc. As kind of mentioned i do intend to get a normal working hours 9-5 job at sometime in my life, paticually once/if we dicide to have kids etc.

This is the biggest decision you will make.And in the long run, is having a large bank balance a trade off for a s

Unless you talk to people who do it/done it then its hard to judge.
I think that I will miss the evenings most, in the garden in the summer etc, plus other things that sound silly but make up your life quality I suppose. Lots to think about.

My job has always involved a certain amount of travel. Last year was particularly intense where I spent most of it in East Sussex.
While we were used to being away, we decided that it would be a good time to jump ship and get back into contracting, so I did.
Working 400 miles away from home now. It can be a drag, but it's the pill we were prepared to swallow. The first stint has been rough as I'm away 5 days a week, leave home at 4 on Monday morning returning Friday night around 10. Having had my contract extended I've factored in a bit more time at home, doing 5 days one week and four the next. It doesn't sound like much, but it'll make a huge difference.
It's certainly not impossible, but as long as you don't jump blindly and consider all the aspects and know that it'll be tough it can work for you.
Being away can work tou your advantage too, I've arraanged for the Wife and kids to come down here, (Bristol), for a long weekend in a few weeks. Bit of a change of scene and all that.
