Hi, i have been working in mainly in construction since i left school 12 years ago with a couple of driving/valeting/tyre fitting jobs inbetween. I left school with limited qualifications (none as i didnt get on at school) and have basically learnt on the job. Since the recession i have only been getting dribs and drabs of work here and there but barely enough to survive. I need to earn some money at least until things pick up rather than buiding up credit cards etc.
I am good at things to do with property maintenance/development etc and am thinking of trying to start a small painting and decorating business with a friend at some point as we both have a lot of experience in this but again i dont see a lot of work out there currently and am not sure it is the most viable attempt of a business, perhaps i should just get some cards/leaflets printed up and advertise a bit and hope for the best.
I have also looked at going to college to train as an electrician but the local college seems very unhelpful in helping me work out how i can go about this, they say the course starts in September but could not tell me how much it would be costing me or what qualifications i need to be able to get on a course, they basically told me to get the new prospectus when it comes out in 2 or 3 months. I have also been looking at doing cpcs training and testing to drive diggers and dumpers etc as i have seen a few jobs advertised but that will cost me in excess of £1k and i am not sure it is worth it in the long run. I just dont know what i should be trying to do anymore.
To be honest my passion has always been for cars although i have only ever ended up cleaning them, changing tyres or shifting them around at a car supermarket. Unfortunately i dont know what i can do to get trained or qualified for anything as i am past the age of free college courses etc so would have to somehow fund myself in whichever path i end up walking. I could probably get a minimum wage labouring job if i wanted to and be earning half of what i am used to but that is the sort of thing i was doing when i was 16 and not exactly a career choice.
Anyway if there is any advice that anyone could give me or jobs going in the area (i am in South Bucks but will travel) i would be very appreciative. I know its a bit of a pathetic sob story but i need to turn my life around and i now have a young Son and I am having problems knowing what to do.
Thanks.
I've not really known what to do since I was made redundant, best part of ten years ago.I am good at things to do with property maintenance/development etc and am thinking of trying to start a small painting and decorating business with a friend at some point as we both have a lot of experience in this but again i dont see a lot of work out there currently and am not sure it is the most viable attempt of a business, perhaps i should just get some cards/leaflets printed up and advertise a bit and hope for the best.

On the down side you're a bloke (I assume) on the upside you have a kid.
I'd actually say that no qualifications stand in your favour. There seems to be loads of jobs like that around here. Either they're advertising them to take the Mikkey. Or they don't like me when they get a whiff of my degree. It's surprisingly hard to hide successfully.
Buggered if I know. I stop paying the mortgage around July.
It's been pretty close for me a couple of times before. I don't think I've got any rabbits to pull out of the hat this time.
I think everyone is up the creek myself. They said on the telly that one in four working age people are now out of work, one way or another. Certainly if I try to put job applications in the main post box on a Sunday evening, there's no more room in the post box. It's better to wait or get in early.
I reckon that the one in four ought to go to London and protest. London would seize up. It's something like eight and a bit million. That's just a bit more than the existing population of London. If you hear anything, let me know I'm up for it.
I know it doesn't pay the bills, but it makes it easier to deal with the mild hunger that results from stretching ones finances.
I've had a letter from the DWP this week trying to cut my benefits. They have also put me on weekly signing. They've not done that to me before in the last ten years. I know for sure that the rules have changed for everyone on the weekly signing. I'm pretty sure that the cutting of the benefits is wider than just me.
I guess the government have got a bit of a financial problem. Especially since all those civil servants are just about to be offered the opportunity to work for nothing.
Good luck mate. Those are the tubes over there, it's easy you just step into the hole and.... Here we go............

OK, please forgive me if I seem insensitive but both your postings seem eloquent and well articulated. In a society where so many people don't seem able to string a sentence together, let alone, write one please indulge me as to why either of you cannot fine work.
I don't mean the dream job, as most of us never get that lucky, but you both seem more than smart enough and well eductated to be able to get a foot in the door easily.
Thanks,
DA

or even educated. Perhaps potential employers are scared to take someone on who is clearly more intelligent than they are?I don't mean the dream job, as most of us never get that lucky, but you both seem more than smart enough and well eductated to be able to get a foot in the door easily.
