So I've accepted a job offer. It's a young company, with only a sales office in the UK. HR is abroad in one country, recruitment is carried out from another country (8 hour time difference between those 2 other countries).

While discussing my contract and benefits I asked for info about pension, shares, health-care etc. The recruiter has sent me the entire documentation for everyone in the UK.

I now know how much everyone earns, how much is charged to provide health-care, pensions etc...

Do I fess up, or play dumb?!

if they ask if you got it then admit it, if not then don't mention it

If you play dumb and the guy realises what he has done it might not go down too well.. but i would still play dumb.

Post it back to the appropriate person marked P&C without cover letter.

That's that approach down the drain, then!

Reply stating they appear to have made a mistake, if they sent it by e-mail it will be in the sent items file and could be used to send to the next new starter at which point they may twig what happened. The sort of person who makes that mistake could re-use an e-mail.

I'd certainly advise them what has happened.

What do you fear by letting them know they've made a mistake?
You've done nothing wrong.

You have more to loose by not informing them of the mistake than you have from ignoring it or not telling them as if/ when they find out you haven't got a leg to stand on.

if there's even the slightest chance your being sounded out............
back it !!!
If your company are yanks then secrecy in those areas is paramount, its like the klingon empire and no one generally knows anyone else's business.
try not to drop anyone in the merde while you are at it too, and you'll already have somone in HR on your side.

I dunno if I'm missing something, but I don't understand why you have a dilemma?

Very good advice there, keep it as low profile as possible, just a simple reply saying you think they sent you wrong thing and could they resend.

imho some of the above advice is plain daft....

- Contact the sender and explain to them exactly what has happened
- Ask them what to do with the file
- Do it

The send (if in the EU) has just broken several DPA rules and if found out could be liable for censure, fines or even custodial punishment.

Tell them what they sent. It's not your mistake having it sent to you. You'll come across as honest and conscientious.

I presume they'll ask you to delete it when they realise, and thank you for letting them know.

(If they do anything else you might want to reassess the offer!) smile

I have been here twice before at the same company. There isn't a problem for you.

Send it back to the sender and cc the most senior HR contact you have simply star on initial inspection this information is obviously not for my eyes. Please can you confirm that this was sent in error.

I was sent redundancy details by accident for the entire company last year I was called in praised for my honesty advised that it was privileged info and to treat it as such. Earn allot of brownie points.

Honesty here will show character.

Since it's email you can admit it, say you've deleted it, and keep it for future reference. Once you know who is who you'll kick yourself for deleting it.

Those who say they would delete it without reading it may be saints but surely you'd also be curious to have a peek if it was for the company you work at?

Is there no integrity left in today's world?
