Got an interview tomorrow - its just going to be a standard competency based one, in the past I've found that these include the old classics such as

"What are you most proud of"

"What do you see as your weaknesses"

and so on and so forth.

Now i've always been of the assumption that they don't really want to hear about the time you cooked a meal for 6 and it came out awesome and you were really proud, or whatever.

So what sort of answers are interviewers looking for in response to these sort of questions?

Cheers

Dan

In my company, the competancy based interview is king, despite what I think about it...

They use STAR, Situation Task Action Result, so any question should be answered to demonstrate each of these. So if you answer the 'proud' question, then perhaps you could describe the sceanio using STAR... might be what they are after.

I fking hate these silly interview questions.

For my current role I just chatted with my Manager, my previous experience, what he expected, some current issues that needed resolving etc etc - a proper 2 way conversation. Much better all round IMO.

I had an interview with an IB when at Uni, I learnt all about the different securities, what was going on in the market and the organisation itself etc, then had the interview with HR and was almost in shock with the "give an example of when you worked in a team" bullst. Needless to say, I gave crap answers, and didn't get the role.

I had one in my last interview, 'Name one thing you did that you would do again differently & why'

I said I rode a push bike in to a tree, if I was to do it again, I'd miss the tree because it hurt quite abit. The 2 interviewers had a good laugh.

Strangely I got the job.

What are you going to say when they ask, "What were the reasons for leaving your last place of employment?"

Maybe I was not too clued up on how I was supposed to answer this so I said I wasn't too good with the higher functions of Excel. I can knock out a basic spreadsheet with the best of people but I don't know everything you can do with it. Wasn't really relevent to the job but they gave it to me, been there 5 years, hardly ever use Excel.

I've always asked the interviewer why they like working for the company and that, for some reason, seems to get there attention.

You could look the company up on their website, might give you some ideas.

Salery might be a good one. Often went to interviews when the job offered was between X and X, but what are they going to offer me? Benefits? healthcare, cycle scheme, gym membership, prospects, training, assistance towards exams, further qualifications etc

A few suggestions - depending on the type of company of course

How many people does the company employ
Are there any plans for investment in the near future
Is the company supportive of employees wanting to gain additional qualifications
Does the company organise any social events for its staff
Does the company have a staff suggestion scheme

Nice one, I've used the 'plans for investment' one before but the others are good, not too intrusive and show a good level of interest. smile

I got asked to give an example of a constructive conversation last week. I took this to mean a positive thing - the interviewer meant a negative thing i.e constructive criticism rolleyes

Not as bad as when I got asked what I would 'put in my wheelbarrow' on my first day if I got the job.

Also been asked:

How would your manager describe you in 3 words & how would your best friend describe you in 3 words.

Plus there's always the usual - why do you want to work here, why do you want to leave your current job, where do you see yourself in 3, 5 years time etc etc.

Take a brag file i.e letters from Customers, letters confirming bonuses etc and talk about that.

Anyone actaully wondered why places use these st stupid fking tactics to hire people?

I have found with smaller places that I have had interviews like the one Mattt described, much better imo.

My current role was a mixture of all the above, and it was so tedious.

It also gets their attention when you say "pass" when they ask you a stupid or irrelevant question.

Usually at the end they ask why you passed on a question, so I just explain my thoughts and that after being asked that question I probably wouldnt accept the job if it was offered as a company that asks "what is my favourite type of cheese? (or similar daft question)" during an interview clearly isnt going to be somewhere I will enjoy working.

They offered me the job, I didnt accept..

What are some good opening lines to strike up rapport with someone you know nothing about i.e an interviewer who you have never met?

I was trying to think of something more memorable than plain business questions!
