Changing employer

I've been head-hunted and don't want my current employer finding out who my new employer is. Is there any requirement for me to tell them where I am going? I appreciate things can't be kept secret and they'll find out sooner or later, but I'd rather limit the fallout of them finding out and making my life difficult while working out my notice period.

They won't be asked for references, I've had a couple of meetings and a verbal offer. It really just depends on the paperwork and package being to my satifaction.

Are you going to work for a competitor then? Do you have any clauses in your contract or a confidentiality agreement which they may try to invoke if you tell them?

There is no onus on you to tell your current employer who your new employer is if you don't have any of these clauses in your contract, but if it is a competitor you are better off being up front about it. The worst that is likely to happen is that they do not want you to come into work during your notice period.

Unless there is some other specific reason why you think you would get hassle?

If you've been headhunted, and working for the new company will be such an issue for your old one, they'll just tell you to sit in the garden for your notice period.

Depends what your managers like. My mrs has just handed in her notice and is moving over to another company in the same line of work. On paper they're not direct competitors (New company caters solely for a premium market, whereas her current employer has only vested around 20% of its resources to this market) - The current company hadn't even heard of the new one. They've come back to her and decided shes going to a direct competitor, and insisted she still attends work for her notice period - However have completely blocked her access to the network and made it impossible for her to carry out any of her duties. 3 more weeks of sitting at her desk twiddling her thumbs i suppose!.

Not all companies have a gardening leave clause in their contracts. In that case you either end up stuck in work with nothing to do or having your noticed paid in lieu and leaving early.

I don't think they can make you sit there doing practically nothing.
My bro in law was a Tesco store manager for a number of years.
Recently moved to Asda and during his notice period Tesco tried to get him to do an admin task for 3 months in an office. I'm pretty certain that he questioned then making him do something so different to his normal job and was then told to stay at home for the period - but be available should they require him.
