Not having the requirments for a job

I've found a job I'd like to apply for.
Its as a vehicle technician with possible progression onto engineering level. I will soon have my engineering degree and have good experience working for a similar company as a junior engineer/technician so I think its worth applying for.
Only trouble is it says HGV licence is required. I do not have one but have always though about getting one and see it as a good skill to have, and would be prepared to get one even if it meant funding it myself.
Do you think its worth applying for the job and telling them this or do you think I would be rejected straight away for not having one?
How long would it roughly take to obtain a HGV licence? Obviously it will vary for people but as an idea I passed my car test first time round and have 5 years driving experience and spent a year driving buses, large rigid lorries, and military vehicles on a test site so have experience of driving larger things just not in a public environment.

Thats what im thinking really.And to be honest I would be prepared to fund it myself as its something I see as an investment and could open up a lot of doors for the future.
It's an automotive engineering degree with placement, I spent my placement at this companies pretty much closest rivals doing very similar type of work so I have relevant experience.

Would be worth saying that you would be willing to pay yourself throught HGV training.Would also depend what HGV licence you need? Class 1 or 2?
You will need to do the HGV theory (sp) test - could take a few weeks to get a date and study for.
You will need to do a medical with your doctor - £100-£120
then a 3-5day course with a driving school. (A decent school will have a month or so waiting list, I made the mistake of going for the earliest course I could, then struggled to get work, maybe not an issue for you.)
I got through it all in about 4-6 weeks, and all in cost about £1000-£1200 for a Class 2.
The Class 1 would be an addition 3-5 day course and cost another £800-1000.
A couple of years ago, one of our delivery drivers said that you can get a cheaper HGV licence from Portugal...IIRC you could do it for about £300 and have a holiday as well. Not sure if what he said was true as I didn't follow it up, but perhaps someone on here knows about other EU countries and HGV licences.

Driving licences issued in one EU country are valid anywhere, so what he says could be true. Dont know what an employer would make of it until you had some experience on UK roads though. Gassing Station | Jobs & Employment Matters | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
