WTD Motorsport Technician

I am looking for a technician to head up the workshop.

I need someone who isn't wet behind the ears, someone that is a self starter, and doesn't just rush in and bolt the first thing that comes to either mind or hand on a car!

Based on the outskirts of Castle Combe and looking to compete in a number of series across the UK.
You will need to have the following:
Good welding skills (MIG and TIG)
Engine, gearbox and differential rebuild and service.
Turbo knowledge
Looms
ECU and mapping
Composites

And there was me thinking there was a lack of jobs out there!

I have 5 race cars to build...so need someone ASAP.

I do however need someone that has a little more experience than fresh out of University or College.

I'm so surprised that no one has taken the role.

Is that about average pay for that level of experience? Reason I ask is that I might be looking to employ someone soon (different part of the country, though) and it seems like good value, I was thinking of £10 ph just for the welding and fabricating.

From my research and experience
Apprentice approx 12k per year
2nd technician approx 18k per year
1st technician approx 24k per year
This is obviously down to experience and whether travel is involved.


depends on the number of hours...but on average £10 per hour is about £19.5k per annum

I have to say 24k does seem on the low side to me for someone with all of those skills. Hell just someone good at mapping could easily earn themselves £25/hr.

Rooster man, there are no skilled people, only failures, or MOT testers as their better known. All the good guys are well looked after because they have the magic factor, passion .
The vast majority of available pre-maddonas couldn`t make it as organ donors. Talk about `care in the comunity`.........
I have been aprenticed to WW2 Tank mechanics,aircraft fitters,aero engine builders and Bentley specialists. each one left his mark on me.I don`t think we will ever se the like of that quality again.Gone are the days wiv yer mates pulling engines out at the weekend,building motorbikes and waking up the neighbours at some un earthly hour with the latest transplant.Rather earn big bucks mapping?? what a piece of piss that is. You see, that's the problem - there is no easy way to practice any of the above. I'll stand up and admit that when I bought my MGB GT back in October I was a 17 year old lad with no practical mechanical knowledge, no driving licence. I could tell you exactly how every part in that car worked, but I couldn't take it apart and put it back together for the life of me. Over the past 8 months - with no outside help aside from forums and a Haynes manual - have taught myself to start from the very beginning; oil changes, basic maintenance etc. Next came the servicing of the distributor and timing system, getting confused and giving a mechanic some cash to set the timing for me. Then came the fiddling around with wiring looms to fix an overdrive fault - it was, to me, a great achievement when I took it for a test run and the overdrive kicked in for the first time since I'd owned it.

However, I'm one of a very few people I know who will even attempt to work on their cars. For example, paying a 'man' to change a light bulb, needing help from the public at the roadside when changing a tyre etc. It's all due to the fact that if you do something wrong, the ECU will pack up, or you'll void your warranty.

I'd love to get a job in a proper garage (read: not Kwik Fit) at weekends and over summer so I can learn from old-school mechanics how to work on cars in a mechanical fashion - cylinder heads, camshafts, carburettors and the like. The fact of the matter is that nobody round here will take me on as I've had no experience. Not even as a lowly-paid apprentice. I too can see proper mechanical nous soon dying out for good.

I admit to knowing nothing of your personal circumstances, but will say that if I was a young gentleman with an interest in that type of car, then I would be on RW774's doorstep tomorrow morning, with a view to finding digs in the area (should be easy enough) were the interview to go well.

I dont think it is that low! And no round here you wont find a basic mechanic on that sort of wage. Most technicians I have spoken to are looking for £100 per day. That roughly works out at £24k per year.

If the right person came along then I would look to maybe up the salary....but I also have to be realistic on what a new company can afford.

Good luck with getting a place in motorsport. If you put the enthusiasm in, which it sounds you have an abundance of, you will get what you need. Question everything you are told, not in a disrespectful way...but just make sure it makes sense! And you will gain the experience you need

anyone got any motorsports jobs going in mk/northants area?

just finishing my NVQ3 in railway engineering, have a few other engineering qualifications (PEO lv2), some experience with milling/lathe work and played a bit with cad/cam at school, i also have Institute of Leadership and Management lv2, and am 1 essay off lv3.

did some time at Monster Sport Europe and M.I.M.S. as an apprentice and miss working on race cars.

anything out there? i dont mind working evenings unpaid first to get a feel for a prospective employer & vice/versa.

I agree you can't just fork out for a top level tech (who, in my experience, will be so far up his own ar5e won't listen to a word of advice you give him) but you are asking for huge a range of skills - ie someone who has years of very varied experience (certainly not most technicians) & is very good at their job - a very small field I'm afraid.

I would be up for that, but I was wondering if he could offer some work experience as I would much love to work in that industry.
