Job offer

First post but I've been a bit of a lurker on here for ages but thought I'd get involved in the discussions.


Basically, I have been through a 3 round interview process for a job with a very reputable company and am now having second thoughts. Contracts are being drawn up now.

My reason for wanting to pull out is that the commute is longer than I expected meaning I will miss out on time with my children which is very important to me.

Has anyone ever gone this far and wanted to pull out at this stage? If so how how did you go about it?

Is the commute longer because of the distance orrush hour traffic?

It may be worth asking if they have a flexible hours policy. Starting an hour earlier may save a lot of time over the week if traffic is the issue.

Or do one hour extra from Monday to Thursday so you can go home 4 hours earlier on a Friday as one of my bosses did. You may also find that the extra hour each day means you miss the bulk of the evening traffic, anyway, so come home less tired/stressed meaning more energy to play with the kids.

Worth also considering whether the potential negatives of alternative employment opportunities outweigh the commute problem of this role.

you've a right to request flexible working if you're a carer of children under 16 anyway. Now's the best time to ask if they foresee any problems with you asking to implement some sort of flexi time.

I've pulled out after receiving an offer before.

Assuming you've not signed a contract - just say no and that you've changed your mind. Most companies won't mind too much (and in my case I received another offer some 12.5% higher 2 off them 2 months later).
