awkward situation

having started my job in London in March, all going swimmingly until today. i work very closely with a manager (same office, similar roles) they have been in place 9 years. finance needed details confirmed of all staff positions & rates of pay, incl managers. finance hands us a sheet with details & this manager sees my pay & throws a wobbler.
it is now extremely uncomfortable in our office, finance have dropped a clanger & I feel guilty receiving pay commensurate with my qualifications & experience. how should I play this?

I'd just keep your head down. It isn't you that's fked up, and you have fk all to gain by raising the subject with anyone.

I have no intention raising the subject but this manager has helped me massively & I really feel for them. the finance manager has placed me in a very awkward position & I just dont know how to look the other manager in the eye especially as sly comments began this afternoon. your advice to keep my head down is sound!

Try and ignore it. He'll probably raise it with your seniors but it's not up to you to do so. Go from there. He shouldn't be mad at you. Your company offered you that amount of money and you accepted it. No problem with anything you've done. When you accepted the job, you didn't know you were all on different ammounts. you're clearly friends with him, tell him you don't see it as your fault and that he should raise it with management instead of being odd with you.

Seriously though, if he gives you grief that reflects very badly on him - you knew nothing about his salary when you were taken on. His beef should be with the company if he feels he is being undervalued.

HR information MUST ALWAYS be handled confidentially, certainly not just handed around on a sheet.
