Do you do unpaid work for your employer

Just thought I'd ask. I assumed most people do a bit, just wanted to know under what circumstances you do it.

As a rule, i never work for free, from time to time i'll call past a mates pub and we might need to give the boys a hand with a dhead or two but thats all good fun and they'll normally chop us out with free drinks

Same for me. I also do a fair few unpaid hours in the office but there doesn't seem to be an option for that.

Agreed, but I don't let them take the piss. Contacting clients after hours if they can't speak during the day yes, staying late to finish a bid proposal yes. Coming in Saturdays and Sundays to have meetings that could be done during office hours, or simply dispensed with, then no.

Work on a flexi basis, but I spend maybe 2 - 2.5 hours 'at work' per week where I'm not getting paid or getting time in hand. It's my choice / fault so I don't really moan, much.

I take unpaid work home after work hours and I take unpaid work home at weekends/days off for me, right until last week, where I got a bking for arriving 3 mins late one day, and 2mins late another, now im doing my hours and only my hours, and I leave right on the dot. Yesterday was funny, in the middle of deploying a website live, the clock struck 5pm, and I just locked my pc and walked out the door, leaving the site down and broken.

Normally do 2-3 hours a day 'unpaid', totally expected in my profession, infact i consider myself quite lucky, as someone said, work till the jobs done.

I work whatever is needed to get the job done, this means I've worked round the clock, weekends and holidays. It is expected within the field that I work at for the level I am at. I don't mind doing so as I wouldn't have gotten to where I am if I hadn't put the effort in, nor would I stay there either.

As a contractor, I don't work any free hours. Any extra hours I work are charged at a minimum of half a day (although there is a little flexibility there depending on the situation). Of course, my clients are not my employers.

Good for you. Be sure you stick to your guns to drive the point home before you relent and go back to your old ways.

Some bosses/managers/supervisors really have no cop-on at all. It's supposed to be swings and roundabouts, not one-way traffic.

Its my own policy not to work extra hours for free, I don't mind staying extra now and again but I wouldn;t want to get suckered into every single day.

Luckily our work operates a flexi system so if you work 20 extra hours in one week there is always scope to get the hours back in the future. However it does go upto a amximum of 40 hours so if you work anything over that you cannot carry it over to the following month - quite a few people lose hours that way.

I spent a lot of my recent holiday working. I often do day-job work at weekends.
But then I also surf PH from work and make non-work calls from my desk.

It would be impossible to separate real work from some of the socialising I do.

Average day probably an hour or so but there will be several times a year when your working until midnight to get a project finished. But it's swings and roundabouts today I finished at 3pm so I get get around of golf in.

Quite often stay half an hour later for one of my bosses, I only work for him once a week so like to get everything finished, I could pay myself for the overtime but I don't bother.

Nope, not at all. My time is valuable and if they dont want to pay me for it then I can either use it for leisure or other work. I will work whatever hours they ask, but im paid by the hour so it doesnt matter.
