My son has had ongoing problems with his tax for the tax year 05/06. He has visited the local tax office five times now to try to sort it out. They confirm using his bank statements that he owes them no money yet we regularly get letters from tax offices in Preston, Ipswich, Watford, Peterborough, Edinburgh and Launceton saying he owes £3125.
To add to the fun the Portsmouth office are now calling to say he owes money for 09/10 yet he is on PAYE? and we have a letter from the Ipswich office to say he has overpaid £199 in the same year and that has been deducted from the amount they say he owes?!!!
How do we stop this as the office in Cambridge claim they are understaffed and the system is falling apart and there is nothing they can do. Bunch of useless bds

you need to kick off the complaints procedure otherwise i promise you won't get anywhere!

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/complaints-appeals/how-to-c...

it will take a while but it is the only way to get stuff fixed when it starts to go wrong. You may have to go to the adjuticator in the end. Don't expect an easy battle- a large chunk of HMRC seem to be made up of Bureacratic jobsworths unfortunately.,

Why doesn't he just submit a properly completed 2005/06 Self Assessment tax return showing the correct situation - or get an accountant to do it for him?

We have but, they lost them twice, we have just completed a third, meanwhile we are still getting letters from every tax office in the country. The new ones are from Iqor House which is a collection agency

The Collection Offices are only interested in collecting money. They won't answer any queries on accounts or tax returns.
The 2005/06 tax return should have gone to his dedictaed Self Assessment tax office 9as opposed to CVollector's Office) or, even better, submitted on-line.

Bad move. The tax offices are hopelessly inept. My accountant handed in my paper tax returns and it took them 2 months to realise they had them and process them. In the meantime i kept getting threatening letters on an almost weekly basis.

Complete a correct tax return online as it is trackable. Paper returns have no tracking and get lost.
