Working Tax Credits
Discussion
Background: a mate of mine has a daughter who, to put it bluntly, is the type of single mother you think of when people talk about dole-scroungers with out of control kids, (she's never worked since leaving school 15 years ago and her son has been excluded from THREE schools). She was continuously 'borrowing' money from him with the promise of paying it back but never actually doing it, and my mate finally had enough and told her he wouldn't lend her any more and she should get a job.
She now finally has a job, (not a good one as she's been on the dole for 15 years!), but as it's low paid she qualifies for working tax credit. She's now told him that the tax credit people have told her she won't get the money for at least 5 weeks so she again needs to 'borrow' from him.
Now he's quite happy to lend her some money one last time if that IS the case, but given her track record of lying to get money out of him he's a bit suspicious that she's trying it on again.
So, does anyone know how tax credits work - i.e. is there a point where the dole stops and then you have to wait a month before the tax credits actually start paying out?

If she's working, I presume she's not "on the dole" (claiming Jobseeker's Allowance).
No, her dole stopped when she started working last week, but she's now supposed to be on this Working Tax credit thingy. I'm asking: does the tax credit thing start immediately or is there a period of time when you don't get it.It usually does take 4 to 6 weeks, though they don't guarantee that. I had a colleague that waited 9 weeks.
I doubt she needs to borrow though as the long term unemployed get a nice fat check for several hundred upon starting work. (for clothes, bus fares and other expenses)

iirc she doesn't even need to claim it, it's automatically given, not only that but payments overlap iirc the end of the first week of work is when the payments stop. but I believe only applies to the long term unemployed.
You're probably thinking of "extended payments" which carries on paying housing benefit automatically.I'm not aware there's any kind of automatic lump sum payment to get people going and tide them over. I think there is a payment to employers now if they take on someone who has been long-term unemployed.
