sickness in the 1st month of employment

a friend of mine has injured his back 4 weeks into his new job, he's a scaffolder, he has a doc's note to verify this, his employer states he has the right to cancel his contract as it happened within the 1st four weeks?
is this true?

There is a certain probationary period - which may vary with individual companies and contracts.

He can be dismissed without reason anytime in the first twelve months let alone four weeks.
