Didnt get the job - send thank you letter?

I went for a second interview last Friday for an IT job in the city. Found out Monday that unfortunately they didnt select me for the job and chose the other candidate, a shame as I thought the interview went very well.

Would it be odd to send a thank you letter to the company to thank them for the opportunity anyway? I doubt anything would come from it but it may help if anything should arise in the near future, and wouldnt burn my bridges with the firm.

I haven't ever done this before but it just seems the courteous thing to do, they seemed a nice bunch of people. I have yet to receive any feedback so I wouldnt send anything until I get it to see what they thought of me.

Any thoughts?

What harm can it do? If the other guy's references don't check out or he screws up a probationary period, they may come back to you. It can't hurt, and it will be more likely to make you stick in their minds.

This. It is not unheard of for the employer to ring you back in a few months time when someone else leaves and that thank you note flashes up in their mind.

It's not done often but this works in your favour as it is something that little bit different that they may not have come accross before.

we keep a file of all candidates. often when we are in a rush to recruit we just go through old interview notes and invite people back in. a thank you letter for us would definitely be noted.

My company does this as well. The person that showed extra interest etc by sending a thank you letter will stand out.

yep us too, and you never know the other guy might turn the offer down, or have another company make him an offer.

Just keep it simple though, not too gushy, because that would be wierd

Thank you for the input guys, it seems that a simple thank you note will be the way forward. I'll get one drafted and wait for the feedback.
