Anyone live here??
Brother is looking to relocate to Flitwick area - what sort of jobs are available locally??
Are Luton and Bedford that bad a place to work?? Luton's reputation is notorius - is that warranted?
He's in retail management at the minute but willing to jump into something else if there is anything about...

Yes Luton's reputation is warranted!
Ex used to live in Bedford on the bad side which wasn't too nice, but there are nice areas like everywhere. I'd say your best off going for one of the smaller towns/villages to live, somewhere like flitwick, ampthill, etc. I'm going to Cranfield uni, managed to get a very nice place in Kempston for a good price.
I would avoid luton. Milton keynes would be a possibility though.

te sections.Flitwick itself isn't that nice a place to live, it mainly consists of large 1960s housing estates although if he can get a place in the older part of town it's not too bad. I've always found Flitwick to be a bit soulless as it hasn't really got a centre or high street. The town is actually split in half by the railway line so the centre of town is really the station and the huge Tesco supermarket.
I live in Ampthill which is about two miles away and is a very nice place to live. It's good a good mix of shops, pubs and restaraunts and has an old market town feel (which it is!). Ampthill is a popular place for younger professionals and families and has a good vibe to it. The only thing it lacks is a railway station but it's easy enough to get to Flitwick - I can walk it in about 40 minutes if I'm not in a rush, or there's a bus.
Depending on his budget and circumstances there's plenty of nice villages in the area as well - have a look at Silsoe, Clophill, Toddington Houghton Conquest, Harlington (which has a railway station one stop from Flitwick) etc. for starters. If he wants to live in a town then logically he'd look at Luton or Bedford as they're on the same railway line as Flitwick. I work in Luton and would never live there personally but plenty of my friends do and they don't seem to mind it. Given the choice I'd look at Bedford first but like all towns both Luton and Bedford have their good and bad bits. Milton Keynes isn't bad if you pick the right area although he'd have to rely on his car to commute to Flitwick and would be at the mercy of the M1 or A507 which can both be a nightmare at the wrong time. Alternatively he could go the scenic route via Woburn and the A5 although a lot of other people have the same idea so it can be slow.
One advantage of this area of Bedfordshire is the transport links. If I get on the train at Flitwick I can be in central London in 40 minutes. I'm 5 minutes from the M1 which will get me to the M25 in another 15 minutes, and Luton airport is only a few miles away making it easy for a cheap weekend away!

I live in a village North of Bedford - I've worked for short stints in both Ampthill and Flitwick. Out of preference I'd say Ampthill because it does have quirky shops, and a Waitrose. Parking can be a problem though as the Waitrose staff aren't allowed to park in their car park, which does clutter up the free car parking slots in the local side streets/ park area. Flitwick always seemed a bit disjointed to me.

Doesnr everyone else park in waitrose though? or is that just me?No, the car park is a short stay one (max 2 hours) which means that no-one who works in the town can leave their car there all day. There's been plans for a long stay car park to be built for a while but it hasn't materialised yet. Parking can be a problem in the centre of town but I only live five minutes walk out and there's no real problem with town workers parking around me.
