Ok, I recently went for a job interview (Friday) and I also told my employer about the interview so that they had a chance to replace me. As I do 6 nights a week I am pretty much two employees with someone that works days covering me on my day off, so I am hard to replace, and I understand that this process takes time.

It turns out that one of the managers at my current place of employment knows one of the managers from the job I went to the interview for on Friday...he drinks in our bar often apparently.

Now, my problem is this. My contract states that I only have to give a weeks notice, but due to my job, I gave them notice as soon as I went to the interview and knew that I had a good chance of employment and that it was what I wanted to do. I thought it was only fair to make them aware. Now to get into the other job I have to have driving assessments etc, all will take up to 3 weeks so they had another 2 weeks to sort things out before I even handed in my notice, they were aware of this.

It turns out that my manager has talked to my new boss and arranged for me to stay in my current position for "up to a month" (plus the 3 weeks) whilst they find someone else and I train them. This was all arranged without my involvement and I was only told about it yesterday.

My main worry is that 3 weeks in and my new employer will turn around and say, "sorry we filled all the roles and now business has dropped/not increased as much as we thought. We don't need another driver" This then leaves me in a very tricky situation as I would then have another night manager who wants full time hours as well so we would end up sharing the hours and only getting about 24 each...not enough to live on.

I am also in a tricky situation now too. If I tell employers to go fk themselves then my new employer will take me as someone that will not play ball...and I lose my job offer. However, if I play along then I have the problem that I explained above.

If I ask for everything in writing then I am going to be seen as a problem before I am even employed and am likely to just be told to get lost.

Any advice please? Of course everything may go to plan and I get my new job in 2 months, but nothing ever goes to plan, as you have probably noticed

I'm sure they've breached some form of confidentiality requirement. How on earth can it be OK for your new boss to have even mentioned you're interviewing, let alone negotiate timings with your current boss without your involvement.

I would tread carefully on this one, I'd suspect you could end up being the one who gets the stty end of the stick. Good luck sorting it though.

That was your first mistake. Don't tell your current employer you are leaving until you have a signed contract in front of you. Anything can happen.

Well looks like good news on this one. Had a call from my new employer and he informed me that it was said more because he was half pissed when he said it and did not realise what he had agreed. (and the manager he was speaking to was very fit ) We have all now agreed on 2 weeks notice and I handed it in today!

OP. sorry to ask the obvious but this comes across as a very informal arrangement. Do you have in your posession a contract of employment from your new employer.

I have arranged to go up on the 28th to sort out all the details and contract signing after my driving assesment on the 27th. My end date at my current employment (driving assesment pending) will then be the 11th.

So in other words, no, not at the moment, but I will do well before I hand in my notice.

Sorry, I have given in my notice, but it is forward dated in anticipation so it is just sat there at the moment and I could just bin it if I so wished. It's part of the giving them extra warning to be honest. Probably getting very complicated now! but I have tried to make sure I have my butt covered from all angles after everything.

This goes as a warning not to tell your employers anything and never work for someone that knows your employer!

There is no way I would go to work for the new manager knowing they'd 'negotiated' over me with my current boss when drunk. Never. In fact, I wouldn't work for either of them.

ymwoods, never EVER tell your current employer what you're doing until you have a signed employment contract or job offer from the new company. Say nothing until you put your resignation letter on their desk. You don't 'owe' them anything other than to resign in accordance with your contract; don't ever worry about 'helping them out' as it were - they would drop you like a hot potato if they had to for any reason.

Someone posted up on here months ago whingeing about the lack of 'employee loyalty' until it was pointed out that most employers wouldn't hesitate to let people go - why should an employee show loyalty? Loyalty and respect is a two-way street and it sounds like the two companies you're dealing with have very little of either imo.
