I'm keeping my eye out for Architectural work in Manchester/Cheshire and any vacancy that crops up seems to be with an agency. The trouble is, the jobs are fairly scarce in my sector and whenever I apply I don't seem to get any correspondence from the agency.
I've tried calling, asking for details then applying and am assured my CV has been passed on, but I've yet to hear back from anyone. This has happened with the last 4 vacanices I've applied for.
Ideally I'd like to apply directly to the employer but it seems almost impossible to do.
Is it just me, or problems with my CV, or are most recruitment agencies like this?

It's the first time I've looked at changing my job since the recession. I moved companies in 2004 and 2006 and literally walked into the jobs. When I speak to the agencies they give me the speil about how strong my CV is, how I have the right type of experience and number of years etc, yet I hear nothing more from them. Its just a bit depressing when you don't even receive a 'thanks but no thanks' and a few reasons why you aren't suitable.
Yeah don't get disheartened it's obviously still not back to 2004/2006 levels. Send a tailored CV for the role, follow it up with a phonecall (or the other way around, to get their genuine email address) and, from that point on, forget about it. If there's any interest they'll be over you like a rash.

I'm sure it would, but if you understood how many applications we receive for jobs then you would realise that emailing every unsuitable candidate is totally unrealistic. Just a thought, but have you tried making an appointment at the agency? I know this will be very difficult, but I have always found that having spoken face to face, the agency is always more willing to recommend you as a candidate. I'm not sure how to do this in your industry or with these agents, but anything face to face will increase your chances.

I have to prepare a portfolio and send it over to see whether I fit their style of Architecture. Apparently they are a company who work for fairly affluent clients (of which I have experience), designing one off houses and project managing to completion. Million pound plus jobs. They are based in North Cheshire.
