Anyone in the RAF/Army?
Discussion
I am looking for some information please.
My son is starting to look towards his options at school, and has been looking at the careers on the RAF and Army sites, at the moment he is looking more at Logistics, mainly driving.
Looking at both sites, he would be likely to end up with a LGV C+E licence, what he wants to know (and what we can't find), is this the same as the civillian one? If he was to do this, and serve his time, then come out, can he use that in order to get work, or would he need to go through the civillian version?
Many thanks

Hi there. I was a radar tech in the RAF for 9 years until I left in 1999. A requirement for my posting with mobile radar tracking systems was that we should have a number of LGV C+E drivers, fortuneatly I was one of them. To answer your question, it is exactly the same as a civilian licence. The test was carried out by normal LGV testers in St Athan, South Wales. My son is starting to look towards his options at school, and has been looking at the careers on the RAF and Army sites, at the moment he is looking more at Logistics, mainly driving.

I passed mine in June 1994 and have never driven an artic since, only drags and 8 tonners! He will need to show he's been continually driving for a civilian firm to be interested.
He should perhaps consider some of the rarer trades that are hard to get into in civi life but are available in the forces. He should also not overlook the Navy
Blacksmith/Farrier, weaponsmith, medic (paramedic), chef (not that hard to get into in civi life but the militarys chef training is top notch), intelligence (could move on to do some very interesting things with the police/security services if he's good at it), electronics, avionics, engineering (bridges, demolition, disposal etc)
The list goes on, if hes going to be a remf he needs to do it with some style.
He should also ask about (if he is interested of course) if his trade is one that can do P coy and be attached to the Parachute regiment and complete the basic parachute course or attached to the one of the light infantry brigades (the armies elite brigades).
When I was at school, many years ago I was looking at doing a trade but being part of the 24 airmobile brigade (paras with cars & helicopters) this of course is now parts of the 16 air assault brigade. Unfortunately I failed the medical

Thanks Odie
It was him that had asked me to look at the RAF site, then we moved onto the Army to make comparisons, just selecting a few jobs at random as he still isn't all that sure what he wants to do, it varies between being a mechanic/hgv driver/fighter pilot at the moment (was also asking about aerospace this morning too)
I guess I should be happy that he is at least keeping his options open and isn't all or nothing on a single choice.

Agree with that. If it's the army then possibly Signals or REME. If the RAF then a tech trade would be more advantageous. As my resettlement advisor said to me before I left, 'you should begin your resettlement into civilian life the day you joined the RAF!'
The C+E is the DSA one and shows on your drivers license, so civvy recognised yes. Crown Immunity was withdrawn some time ago!
THe Driver routes sometimes don't offer the best promotion though (in the Army anyway)...tell him to look at more challenging/promotable trades that come with C+E as well.
Go to an AFCO, speak to the recruiters but DON'T let them push him into something he doesn't want...
Best of luck to him!

Thanks everyone for the input.
At present, he is still only 13, so will be thinking very soon about what course options he wants to take at school, so is it a little early to be thinking about all this, or should he speak to someone and then gear his options towards what is needed/helpful?

If hes serious about joining the forces then he should start by checking out the medical requirements, check out the fitness test and start on working towards it.
Also dont forget that he could become an officer. That was the route I was taking.

May also be a good idea for him to join a Combined Cadet Force or ATC? Always looks good when he goes for the interview. At present, he is still only 13, so will be thinking very soon about what course options he wants to take at school, so is it a little early to be thinking about all this, or should he speak to someone and then gear his options towards what is needed/helpful?
