Does anyone have any opinions on this? I'm seriously considering it but have no idea what I'd be letting myself in for. I have no ties so I just fancy doing it for the sake of doing it. Any opinions at all?

Plenty of perks! The women-folk are desperately filthy.

Not been myself but know some people who do some business there - they say Almaty is the place to be. There is another city built by the state in the middle of nowhere where the Government is based but apparently it is dull and everyone flies in to work in the week and then go back home to Almaty. Business is booming according to them...

They also have the biggest proper Eiffel tower replica in the world:

I've visited a few times (for work) and really liked it. Nice people, very friendly and, yes, the women (well ,some of them) are very foxy.

we need to know what you're going to be based. The west of the country is totally different to
the east.
Spent time in Atyrau and Aktau, where most of the oil business is conducted. And yes, the ladies
are foxy and have a great sense of humour.

I'll find out where it will be based as on our intranet the location is simply 'Kazakhstan'.

I have a friend who lived out in Kazakhstan when he was around about 10, his dad is/was some form of international negotiator. He has some interesting tales from out there, they had to live in a secured house as they were rich in comparison to the locals but he never mentions it being dangerous. He complains about how Borat portrays the place as whenever he mentions it he gets the 'eess nice' comments thrown at him!

Overall from what ive heard id go for it, if its only for a year or so it could be an experience and if you have no ties then you may aswell.

Any information I could provide is probably about 18 years old as I was in there just as it really opened up to the west.

I liked the place (Almaty primarily) but also Astana/Akmola and out into the back of beyond - but then again - at that time Westernism hadn't taken root - when carrying a carrier bag with a western symbol on it e.g. Marlboro was seen as a good thing by the locals.

There weren't any hotels at the time - well there was one but it was pretty dire - so I had a room at a sanitarium on the outskirts of the city. A couple of years later - the Marriott opened a hotel. No restaurants to speak of - one did eventually open that you paid your money in the morning to get the food for the evening, then there was the Italian place which was a culture shock.

As has been said - the women were Russias best kept secret. The business club on a Friday evening was just heaving with them. At the time - some of them were either desperate or I was really good looking - I'll leave you to make your choice.

I haven't been in there for about 15 years but my last trip I was kind of saddened that it had changed so much and become just another western type location.

Winter was fun (and bloody cold) - especially if you've got time for skiing up in Medeo.

This probably doesn't tell you anything about the place now - but its brought back some nice memories for me.

Oddly, I met some lady out here in Dubai that was from Almaty. She was on holiday and had popped into a bar where a mate of mine was doing some live music and she came over to us and asked if he wanted a gig in her Irish Pub.

Mad as a bag of cats. Mate went to do another set and I thought it would be rude to leave her on her own. We're chatting away and after about 20 mins she just stopped talking, got up and walked away never to be seen again.

It was inane banter so nothing that could have offended her. I thought she might have gone to the loo but she never came back.

Perhaps, but she kept asking if I wanted to go their as well and was asking lots of questions about how the set up would be etc... for her place.

Was very odd.

what's the job mate?

i would go for the right role [oil/energy for me]. reckon you'd be fairly fked language-wise, can't see a big expat community being out there. on the other hand, you could make king within the year!

Got some friends with a young family living/working in Atyrau. Language barrier seems to be fun but otherwise ok.

laugh

There are loads of expats and quite a lot of the locals speak English (or a form of it)!

The hand signal for the ladies are obvious enough... wink
