The Royal Wedding public holiday

Now that the government have said the day of the Royal Wedding will be a public holiday, what does this mean in terms of people having a day off? I presume most people have holiday entitlement that is something like "22 days plus bank holidays".

However, my wife returned from work today saying that her boss has announced they will be open on the day of the wedding and staff will be expected to attend as normal.

I know supermarkets tend to open on some public holidays and close on others. For example, our local Sainsburys is open on Good Friday but closed on Easter Monday.

Are there different "levels" of public holiday?
