The story so far - was being made redundant but got a found a new job that started just after finishing at the old one. The company is just being set up and is the UK arm of a Chinese car manufacturer. Could only get partial T&C's out of them before starting. They have finally produced my full contract for me to sign - it contains this clause :-

"The Company reserves the right to appoint you to other positions (whether within the Company or any Group Company) and to base you at other locations, whether temporarily or permanently, as the needs of the business require."

Now, to me, this means I could go in tomorrow and they could say as of next week you'll be based at head office in China (wife who works and kids in school means this is not an option). Not worked in the auto industry before but have worked for several companies with a significant global presence and not come across a clause like this. Anyone come across this before ?

Thanks in advance.

Not exactly the same, but I have a similar clause in mine - I tried to negotiate it, but they wouldn't have it.I just wanted a 'with prior agreement/notice' type caveat added.

Just comes with the territory working for a Global company!

If they say move, you could always leave - worst comes to worst.

that was in my last perm contract. it only came into play during redundancy when I was within my rights to ask them for a foreign role which I declined.

the cost to relocate you and your family will render it a moot point, don't sweat it.
