Automotive Design Graduate - can any of you PHers help??
Discussion
Hi guys and girls,
Ok, where do i start?! My name is LUKE KILPATRICK. I Graduated in July 2010 with a BSc (Hons) degree in Automotive Design and Technology, am currently searching to start my career in the automotive industry, and looking for that first step into a world for which i have a passion.
From my three year degree course I have learnt the ins and outs of the design process, as well as learning how to use software such as Photoshop for graphical design, CAD programmes for 3D modelling/engineering drawings, and material selection software. I have also had experience in designing packaging, designing T-shirts, have good knowledge of manufacturing techniques and am mechanically minded when it comes down to component design.
I have a true passion for design and express this with experienced model making skills and great freehand sketching techniques. I believe that working within a prestigious environment, amongst a highly skilled team, would be a great place for me to show my creativeness and originality as well as develop and flourish as an individual. I feel working in an environment within a team of people that also share the same passion would be amazing. Not only do I have an academic background on this subject, including CAD and engineering drawing experience, but have also gained a number of practical skills whilst doing vocational work at a local automotive bodyshop. I have also completed a restoration project of my own, and worked closely within a racing team whilst taking part in Formula Student (FSAE) this year with the SU Racing Team.
I have my C.V. and Design portfolio ready to go on request.
Any automotive, design, or model making companies out there that are ready to take on a well trained graduate that has a talent and passion for the subject for full time work, please contact me via this post or at:
luke_kilpatrick@hotmail.co.uk
I am prepared to move anywhere in the country for the right job, have a full driving licence and own a car.
Regards
Luke

Unfortunately mucker you might have missed the boat for this year.
I graduated in Aerospace Engineering this year and started applying around March time. My method consisted of recruitment agencies and compiling lists of engineering companies and then trawling their websites.
Eventually I got lucky and in August was interviewed for Nissan, I'm now working in Exterior Design in Cranfield.
My advice to you is to trawl the websites of the car manufacturers who have bases in the UK... Lotus, JLR, MINI (?) etc and if you can't find any information then phone the reception and ask to speak with HR.
One of the other graduates didn't apply through the website, he sent his CV directly to HR.
Good luck, it's bloody hard work, but having driven a GT R at somewhere over 150mph since starting here I can definately say it's worth it.

nice one people, cheers for the positive advice and feedback, ive been in the process of applying for jobs for a few months now including a few graduate courses, several small uk companies, and in other areas of design including graphic design and model making. I will however give the links a try that have been provided. Im just waiting to get lucky and get that first step!
Cheers again !!
