Having grown rather tired and frustrated with my current career. Not through lack of love for the job but through lack of opportunity, at the moment at least. I looked over Christmas at alternative careers paths and choices. The one I keep coming back to is Dentistry.

After basic research, I am eligable to study the 5 year course at Manchester University, which would be a long hard slog and leave me with a large student loan.

Can any Dentists or Dentistry student give me a for and against about this career? Suggesting alternative degree courses and whether there is a possibility of studying 'on the job'.

Any guidance at this stage would be a great help.

Would the distance learning courses show here: http://www.dentistry.manchester.ac.uk/postgraduate... be of use, would they be enough to get me a job in Dentistry? Both are Dental Public Health, one is an MDPH and the other is a MRes.

My Sis is a Dentist and talking to her about the students now unless you've straight A's, done a gap year helping the needy in Africa / India etc and also have some sort of sporting excellence at school you can forget it at the interview stage. Sorry but the courses are so oversubscribed simple qualifications don't count as everyone has top notch grades.
