Fuel prices restricting new job choices?
Discussion
I've been offered a new job which will add another 10 miles each way to my current, cushy 7 mile commute - ie. another 100 miles a week or ~400 miles a month. Most of this extra mileage will be on the motorway around Manchester
Thing is as the new job is only offering £2500 more, increasing in 3 months to £4k before tax I'm having second thoughts about moving, especially as my current 7 mile run only takes 20mins and the new one will add another 20mins on.
Obviously there are other reasons for moving jobs, and public transport is unfortunately not an option, but are we going to see distance as a major obstacle to changing jobs unless employers cough up more money.
I am currently in negotiations, but it's not really an employee's job market at the mo especially up north.

Can you please clarify something - Is the new job really only paying £2.5k per annum (increasing to £4k in 3 months) or is it £2.5k more than you are on now?Thing is as the new job is only offering £2500 increasing in 3 months to £4k before tax I'm having second thoughts about moving, especially as my current 7 mile run only takes 20mins and the new one will add another 20mins on.
Is that £4k in writing? If it isn't it won't happen. (Well, it might but you know how things go.)
Is this job a career move or just a bit more money? For £2500/£4000 a year, I wouldn't bother esp if it's in the upper tax bracket. However, if you're on £17k at the mo, it's a bigger jump and likely a career move to boot so worth it in the long run.
