Would you change your career?

Just having a moment...

I'm bored of my job, current and potential earnings are above average - there's no doubt i'll live a comfortable life if i continue.

But im bored.

There must be an age you get to where a change of career and starting again at the bottom becomes impractical?

What is that age?

From the age of 16 I've followed in my fathers footsteps, been spoilt with the life my parents have allowed me to live and to be honest have been blinded by £ signs. I did all the relevant work experience, did the relevant uni course, got on a top grad scheme and worked from there...

Still, im bored.

I'm also past attaching too much importance to money... I mean, who needs a Gallardo when i can supercharge an MX5 for a couple of £k, right?

No certain 'age' to it, more what it means for your financial commitments.

Plenty of people stuck in jobs they cant afford to get out of because they have too big a mortgage / car payments / bills.

If you can afford to take the hit do it. If you can't, tough... but you can spend some time lowering your outgoings to allow you some flexibility.

Take a look at the job forum, quite a few people asking for advice in a similar position.

Thinking about it myself at the moment. Just looking into the possibilities and what it will cost me and how long before I can be up and running and earning a decent potential.

Get a job you love and you'll never work again.

I'd suggest it's not so much the job you dislike but the lack of control you have. Think about what you like doing and create a job around it, the sense of accomplishment is addictive.

I considered going back to Uni to be a doctor. Although that would take YEARS!

Few folk i know work in the same industry and have done for years and they routinely change jobs every few years because they learn something new and it stays interesting for a while.

my own personal philosophy is never stand still. always change always be somewhere else in life. a new hobby a new this a new that a new look at a different career.

A career for life seems to be a dying concept much like the job for life was, redundancies and out sourcing mean it's always worth looking to diversify, having said that I should take my own advice and look outside Engineering, the problem is having the balls to do it and a clue where to look.

I've always been in and around the same industry, working with my old man on the side. I dont have to worry too much about that. Even when I changed my day job and went into sales i was still involved in development.

Management consultancy has always appealed. I have a good cv and good qualifications, but I'm bored day to day.
