NVQ through work

I'm currently at college and working part time at a local garage and am seriously considering (for several reasons) working full time instead of college.
I'd like too do this but then obviously I wont get anything from college and I'm not sure how to go about setting up getting an NVQ through work.

The garage I work for is a small independent and therefore does not have all of the main dealer resources and connections etc.
How would I go about getting an NVQ through work?
How is it decided which level you go in at or is it always level 1?

Contact your local careers office who will let you know which companies are providing NVQs in your area. Normally the employer would then contact the company to see if there is any funding available (I have never paid for an employee to do an NVQ as there always seems to be funding available)

An assessor will normally then visit to see what level of NVQ is most appropriate. You do not always start at Level 1. It all depends on the NVQ and what your current role & responsibilities are.

Then you sign up, agree a timescale in which you will complete the NVQ and off you go.

Make sure you speak to employer first though, as the NVQ will take up a bit of your work time, even if its just the times the assessor visits to see how your work is going.
