So I apply for a job.
Now admittedly I apply for the said job last friday. (And that was the closing date).
They are holding interviews locally and also at the head office.
The local interviews were yesterday and today.
They have sent me an email inviting me for interview today at 5:32.
Now as the local interviews were yesterday and today I have been invited to attend the head office interview.
Great.
It's 233 miles away. It would have been nice if they had got their act in gear so I could have attended the local interviews. Or even left a bigger gap between the end date and the interview dates.
466 mile round trip......are they having a laugh or what?
Oh...and the interview is on wednesday at the latest, doesn't give me a huge amount of time to book a day off work either.

It's not a very efficient way to manage the recruitment process: the interviews are way too close to the closing date. Presumably they've been shortlisting candidates for interview throughout the process rather than waiting to get everyone in and then choosing the best people once the advert had closed. Which probably ultimately means they started the advertising too late in the first place.
That said, the market is such that unless the job is very "niche", they'll probably have plenty of people interested. So I guess it depends on how much you want the job, really. Putting yourself out to travel a long way at short notice is a good way to show your commitment.

Having thought about it slightly longer...
I'm of this view.
My application was on the last day.
They weren't going to offer me an interview as they had filled all the slots for the manchester interviews (thursday and friday).
But after seeing them all they were all crap which is why they sent me the invite to surrey at 5:30 after discounting everyone else

Clearly the day off may not be possible at short notice, the company wanting to interview you should realise this (at least..!).
Assuming you can't take the day off, contact them explaining the short notice situation, rationally; they don't need you to point out their selection criteria as they went along wasn't an ideal approach for you and that you live 100s miles away etc, why should they care?
Suggest they consider carrying out an interview via a video-conference (eg: Skype), as despite trying, you're unable to get the time off from your current job as the policy is (whatever it is) and you need to adhere to that. You can always attend a second face to face interview with more appropriate prior notice.
Perfectly reasonable in my opinion, means they can see you, you can see them (and you can have a load of notes behind the camera if needed).
Of course this could be totally inappropriate for the job as I don't know what it is
