Background to Build Team

The Build Team operates as ‘interface’ between our Engineering / Design group and our clients. It is the build team who:

• Build our existing products
• Work with Engineering to develop new and existing products
• Present finished machines to our customers
• Install, test and subsequently maintain the products
• Feed back design and maintenance issues to the Engineering group
• Run machine demonstrations for marketing purposes.

The Build Team is a ‘pool’ of people with individual skills, and a blend of mechanical, electrical and test skills. The nature of our work is varied, and therefore the Team needs to be adaptable. The type of work varies from repeat build work through to product support, product development and research.

The build team members are exposed to the full range of manufacturing activities, including kitting of sub-assembly components from our stores. A build member may also be required to supervise the work of others - either fellow build team members or external sub-contractors. The Build Team member will also, after a suitable qualification period, be expected to train others in building, maintaining or operating our products. The training could be aimed at staff or client staff.

Finally, there is a policy of developing staff in the build team. New joiners are being sought who will, despite the starting level, have the wish to develop a career.

ONC/HNC/BTEC in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent
Technician/Apprentice Trained
Formal training in hardware, and Windows operating environment.

Experience

• Considerable knowledge of working in a technical environment within a high-tech engineering/manufacturing company
• Significant time spent in a precision assembly environment
• Extensive understanding of mechanical fault-finding down to component level
• Appreciation of precision mechanisms and their electrical content
• Ability to read mechanical drawings
• Familiar with full range of engineering materials, finishes and tolerances
• Knowledge of the Windows environment and Microsoft suite of products
• Electrical experience of wiring practices an advantage

Key Job Tasks
• Day to day responsibility for running an electromechanical assembly cell
• Working hands on as part of the assembly team to assemble and wire products
• Responsibility for the team hitting output and quality targets
• Liaising with suppliers, design and commissioning engineers, the purchasing team, and other internal functions, as required, to maintain and improve the output of the cell
• Holding daily team planning meetings
• Liaison with other groups to receive / negotiate priorities
• Ensuring that production documentation is kept up-to-date
• Flexibility to be deployed on other work outside the cell, if the need arises
Key Job Responsibilities
• Representing the Build Cell in defining continuous improvement activities
• Responsible for implementing continuous improvements related to the Production Cell
• Implementation of lean manufacturing philosophies
• Establishing and maintaining a training matrix to record the training of team members in various assembly operations. Training team members
• Advising other product development teams on best practice within similar Production Cells
