Hi all... Seems like the TA must be crying out for EOD specialists as well within 3 weeks of registering interest and collecting forms (Last Tuesday), I have passed my medical (weight, height, play with you balls, blow into a tube etc) and am now being sent off for selection at Pirbright (I think) next Friday on the 25th...
Was just wondering if any of you are in the TA and have any experiences of it, and what can I expect.

I did 6 years in Intelligence Corps (Volunteers), best time I ever had, did some crazy things and got paid very well for it. I had weekends in London, ski training in Austria, also managed to get 6 weeks in Hong Kong.
Worked with regular units most of time, but also Special Branch people, ex SAS / paras & marines who taught me to drink properly !!
I worked full time & did 150 days a year with TA which paid for deposit on my first house, came out in 94 and was getting £80 a day + expenses. Came out because options for change came in = only training and 30 days a year
In basic training you will have to put up with long hours and plenty of bulls
t, its hard but great fun, go for it and enjoy.

my brother was in years back, and they did training for jumping out and dispersing round a chopper, by running through a field with one guy making wump wump noises and waving a big bit of rope over his head, so people would duck as they 'jumped out' I mean lee enfield rifles for god sake.
It's RE (101 Regt) but if I was to go reg (likely if i enjoy the TA) i would probably go for ammo tech in the RLC...
As for disposing of IEDs in Afghan, I was under the impression the majority of the job for TA is predominantly in the search and ID of mines/IEDs etc rather than the disposal. Was chatting to a few blokes who have come off tour down there and they explained what the crack was.
As for Afghan, providing its not in the next 2 years It really doesn't bother me too much (not just saying that either). A mate of mine who came back missing bits and pieces hasn't once said a bad word about going so if he still doesn't regret it why should I...

can someone tell me more about the ta other than what you get on the website

you know, the useful stuff
also if you get deployed do you have to go? silly question I know but how would your employer deal with it?

Short answers
Ages - 18 to 33 as a officer, 18 to 43 as a solider.
Entails - Everything the regular army would do. There is a range of jobs, the options being "I'll take the job my local unit does", or "I'll join one of the specialist national units and travel further"
Is it just weekends - Its 29 days a year minimum training including 15 days continuous. Whether you do these as weekends / midweek evenings I don't think matters so long as you do at least that amount. I stand ready to be corrected.
Do you have to go if deployed - If your employer can make a case that it will be extremely damaging to their business you may not have to. They are required to sign your application and will have been made aware of their requirements, obligations and what they can claim (basically, the cost of someone doing your job whilst you are on deployment)

How long did the recruitment process take for you from sending in an interest form or whatever route you took to being told "you are now a soldier under training"?
My employer has finally decided they are ok with backing me, and may even provide some extra leave for training!

Put it this way, within 17 days of walking through the door for the first time at a TA centre I was off at Crowborough for my selection weekend...How long did the recruitment process take for you from sending in an interest form or whatever route you took to being told "you are now a soldier under training"?

Got measured for kit Tuesday and only because the recruiting officer was out I wasn't sworn in and booked up for my first serious training weekend there and then. It's a pretty quick process if you are fit enough; have decent recruiting staff and appear and act keen to htfu and get on with it...
